20. How do I get my scholarship money?
1. How much money does all this
cost?
The cost is absolutely minimal.
There is no entrance or contestant fee. Our goal is that every constant
would come away with more money for school than she came with. Any expense is for
the five areas of competition, interview, talent, eveningwear, on stage question, and
swimsuit. We encourage you to not go out and buy anything. We encourage
you to borrow a smart looking suit or outfit for the interview. We have
swimsuits you may rent for a nominal fee. We encourage you to use their own or borrow a prom dress for
the eveningwear competition. You might buy a pair of high heels for
the walking part of the competition.
2. What are the areas of competition and how are they scored?
The five areas of competition are,
interview, talent, evening wear, on stage question, and swimsuit. Interview is the
most important. It tells us the most about the person. And of course it is most
important to young women as they look for a school and career. The interview is
weighted at 25% Talent is next. It is worth 35%. Is she entertaining? Is She expressive?
Does she have the discipline to develop a performance talent? Then there is Evening
ware at 20%. Can she make herself presentable? Are her wardrobe choices appropriate
and tasteful? Does she possess poise, and grace under extreme pressure? Next is
swimsuit. Is she physically fit? Does she have the courage to walk with nothing
to hide? Is she proud of who she is? Finally the On stage question at 5%. Can she
think on her feet in front of hundreds of strangers? How well can she put her thoughts
together in a succinct few sentences?
3. How much time does all of this take?
We look at this as a process. Perhaps
you are familiar with the leadership camps that many high schools have for a few
select students. This type of process does require a time commitment. You should
plan on a few hours each on the days of orientation, audition, mock interview, and
several workshops. Also you are required to attend rehearsals four evenings the
week of the Pageant and of course the 3-hour Pageant.
4. What sort of talent are you looking for?
Your talent should be a performance
talent, which you can execute on command within 1-1/2 minutes. Beyond that there is
a very high degree of flexibility. Very common examples are song, dance, musical
instrument, and monologue. We have seen winning karate, ice carving, magic, and
writing demonstrations.
5. How long is talent?
The talent competition is 1-1/2 minutes
long.
6. Where do I get my dress for the Eveningwear competition?
We suggest that you borrow or recycle
a prom dress. Gowns may be rented locally. Other contestants
are also a source for winning gowns. It is not uncommon to have someone take the
competition in a $70 winner.
7. Do I have to have a "certain look?"
Absolutely not.
The judges are looking for someone who is well-rounded, outgoing,
goal-oriented,
education-focused, and involved in their community. Each contestant
brings her unique voice, character, and experiences and thus enriches the
program.
8. How do I qualify for the Miss Placentia & Miss Yorba Linda Scholarship Program?
To qualify for the Miss America
Program in California you must be a Female, never married, and never have had children,
a U.S. citizen, at least 17 years old at the time of local pageant but no more than
24 years old on December 31, 2010. You must also be a High school graduate or will
become a high school graduate no later than six months after the date of your first
local competition and be a legal resident of California at least 6 months prior
to local pageant competition. To qualify for Miss Placentia you must have resided
in the City of Placentia or Yorba Linda for a minimum of six months prior to entering.
OR You have completed at least one fulltime semester at a high school in the Placentia
Yorba Linda School District or Cal State Fullerton. OR You have been a fulltime
employee of a firm located within Placentia or Yorba Linda for a minimum of six
(6) months prior to entering
9. How are the scores tabulated?
The competitions are each scored
1 through 10 with 10 being highest and 1 lowest. The scoring must be completed during
each phase of competition and turned in immediately upon completion. Once turned
in the auditors throw out both the highest and lowest and average the remaining
scores just like the Olympics.
10. Where does all of this take place?
All of the activities take place
in the city of Placentia. We have been very fortunate to be offered the continued
use of local churches and retirement homes. The Pageant is held in Bradford Auditorium.
11. How do I get a sponsor?
We have been very successful in
involving many local businesses as contestant sponsors. Normally we will provide
them for you, however, you may provide your own if you wish.
12. What can I expect my daughter to gain from this experience?
We see ourselves as life coaches
and these are skills that will benefit your daughter for the rest of her life. The
most important thing that your daughter will gain from this experience is time management,
Your daughter will learn confidence and self-esteem and commitment as she acquires
the ability to balance priorities in her life while being held accountable for deadlines,
and paperwork. Your daughter will gain from this experience a new level of maturity
and responsibility that will absolutely amaze you.
13. What can I expect to gain from this experience?
You will have the opportunity to
perform on a stage in front of one thousand people. You gain interview skills that
you will use for every job for which you interview. If you interview for a scholarship
or if you have to interview to get into college, the skills that you gain from our
program will take you wherever you want to go. And then of course there is always
the scholarship money. We give away about fourteen thousand dollars in scholarships
each year. Miss Placentia earns four thousand five hundred dollars. Even every non-finalist
earns three hundred and fifty dollars. And we give talent, and interview scholarships
of three hundred dollars each.
14. How can I become a volunteer?
On an annual basis, Miss America
state and local titleholders, along with the Organization's network of volunteers,
participate in more than 12,000 community service projects, providing in excess
of 500,000 service hours to worthy causes. If you have time, talent, a service or
a venue to contribute, we have a place - and a need - for you. Whether you help
with our local Miss America program, wash cars at a fundraiser or reach out to other
community service organizations and educators to secure briefings and platform related
appearances for your Miss America titleholder, you will be making a positive difference
in your community and in young women's lives. For information contact Kathi Baldwin

15. What is the Platform?
In 1989, the Miss America Organization founded the platform concept, which requires
each contestant to choose an issue about which she cares deeply and that is of relevance
to our country. Once chosen, Miss America and the state titleholders use their stature
to address community service organizations, business and civic leaders, the media
and others about their platform issues. Since 1989, Miss America titleholders have
appeared at thousands of public speaking engagements and charitable events to generate
awareness for a variety of causes, including homelessness, HIV/AIDS prevention,
domestic violence, diabetes awareness, character, education, literacy, etc.
16. Who are the judges?
The integrity of the judging process is very important and we take it very seriously. Each year one of the judges is usually a local celebrity, someone maybe not too familiar with the program and chosen to endear us with the community. Each is allowed to serve only once and thereafter they always remain strong advocates for the program. The remaining four or six judges are selected from a roster of state certified, currently trained jurists having many many years of experience judging Miss America local and state finalists. They may not judge the same pageant two years in a row and they must declare if they have judged a contestant before.
17. Do I have to have a school or major selected?
No. It is understood that
graduating Seniors may still be deciding on a school and a major. While it may
appear more focused to have a major selected, college is a time of discovery and
self exploration, therefore, if you are unsure, then "undeclared" is the best
choice.
18. What if I'm a junior?
The Miss Program is for
graduating Seniors and older. If you are not yet a Senior then you should
consider the Teen Program.
19. Do I get to keep the crown?
Yes, if you are selected as Miss
Placentia, along with over four thousand dollars in scholarship, the opportunity
to go on to compete in Miss California thus receiving an additional one thousand
dollar scholarship and started on the road to Miss America you are awarded your very
own official crown. For you will always be Miss Placentia.
